Excursion: Forschungs-Neutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) 2025
On January 9, 2025, the traditional excursion to the research neutron source took place as part of the Structural Physics lecture in the Integrated Life Science Bachelor’s program. This year, the excursion was conducted together with students from the Experimental Physics 3 lecture and the lecture “Introduction to X-ray and neutron scattering “.
The visit began with a lecture from Professor Winfried Petry, who introduced us to the diverse applications of the neutron source. Afterward, we toured the research center in guided groups. It was particularly impressive to see the various experiments being conducted there and to learn how the scientific work is carried out. Walking through the individual measurement halls, where the research instruments are, gave us a clear sense of the scale of the instruments and the entire large-scale research facility.
Although the neutron source was not operational at the time, it was still fascinating to gain insights into the work inside a research center.
The excursion concluded with a visit to the campus pub, where we had the chance to chat with the scientists over traditional Bavarian food and drinks in a relaxed setting.
Overall, the excursion was very educational and exciting and providing us an excellent understanding of the work conducted in research centers.
