FRM II Excursion 2024
On January 24, 2024, the traditional excursion to the “Forschungs-Neutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II)” in Garching took place, as part of the Structural Physics lecture of the Integrated Life Science study program.
The excursion to the FRM II was very educational and definitely unique. We were given a real insight into all areas of this research facility. This was mainly made possible by the guided tour led by experienced staff, as all of our questions were answered, and we were introduced to actual research.
Before entering the building, we attended an interesting talk by Prof. Winfried Petry, the former scientific director of FRM II. He talked about theory and past applications of the facility, which provided great context for the whole excursion. Afterwards we visited the neutron source, which, unfortunately, was currently shut down. Nevertheless, to participate a guided tour through the individual measurement halls was very impressive. Standing next to such huge research instruments quickly makes you realize what the term “large-scale research facility” really means. Finally, everything was completed with a get-together at the campus pub, where relaxed conversations between students and FRM II scientific stuff members took place.
Overall, the excursion was truly a very positive experience and allowed us to gain a remarkable insight in the world of research facilities.
